Kickback is an upcoming VR game, where the focus of the development is around as high detailed graphics as possible, and smooth as silk weapon handling.  This was designed for competitive, tactical gameplay that focuses on teamwork and realism so you can feel like you are actually on the battlefield.

The primary focus of this game will be on search and destroy type game modes, where one side will attack an objective and the other side will defend it.  This will be high stakes in terms that each round you will only get one life, but there are plans to add several more game modes.

Core Mechanics being worked on:

  • Realistic gun shot sounds, based on environmental factors such as shooting in an enclosed space, behind a wall, or long range shots.  Kickback will focus on all three of these factors including even the speed of sound.  These factors are also applied to players footsteps, and player voices.
  • Realistic bullet speed and bullet drop.  Every weapons stats, sounds, and even recoil patterns are being fitted to that particular real life weapon.
  • Cool effects.  This game will take advantage of newer unity features which include things like shockwaves on explosions, or heat distortions based on weapon shots.  There are some less realistic features being added too, such as a tunneling effect when being shot.  This may not be a thing in real life, but we found through testing this is the sort of adrenaline engaging event that makes it feel like you are being shot.
  • Tactical gameplay.  Plan your plays with your team before the match, then communicate using radios or proximity chat to concur the battlefield.
  • Realistic movement.  Many games play off quick reactions and movements, but we wanted this to feel realistic in this regard too.  For example this game will feature a momentum based movement system, so you can not full sprint and stop on a dime.
  • Never ending supply of weapons and maps.  This game has been designed with easy of adding weapons and maps to the game.  Custom map support will be coming later.  This game was built by someone who has a history of releasing over 20 custom maps for Onward VR, and as such they have a deep love for making content for the game and will continue to do so throughout its life.
